Obituary for Dorothy Hansen (Smith)

Dorothy D. Hansen, 77, of Delavan, died in her home Wednesday, January 17, 2018 of natural causes surrounded by her children. Dorothy was born September 15, 1940, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, the daughter of Richard and Sylvetta Smith.

Dorothy loved to help others and meet new people. She volunteered at a local hospital as a candy striper before marrying her first husband and high school sweet heart, Forrest “Bill” Miller. Together they had five daughters, who she stayed home to raise with much joy. After marrying her second husband, Raymond Hansen, she added two more children to her brood, the last being the baby boy she always wanted. Dorothy was very proud of all of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She found much joy in spending time with her family and with the numerous friends she met through the years while bartending at various Lake Delavan establishments, and being a part of many pool and euchre leagues. She also worked in the deli at Delavan Mobil and the bakery at Pick N Save. Many of the people she met over the years called her Mom or Grandma and she always welcomed them into her heart and arms. She will be greatly missed by her entire family and her friends.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Deborah (Miller) and Donald Beers of Footville, WI, Vicki (Miller/OBel) Riemer of Glenview, IL, Angela (Miller) and Edward Staven of Clinton, WI, Rebecca (Miller) and Timothy Matzke of Sharon, WI, Robin (Miller) and James Minarick of Delavan, WI, Heather (Hansen) and Steven Gyenes of Sharon, WI and Brian and Amber (Carpenter) Hansen of Delavan, WI, 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; her siblings: Valery Harper, Richard Smith, Donald Smith, Rosemary (Daniel) Moore, Shelly (Walter) Woolever, William (Rosalee) Smith, Mark (JoAnn) Smith, Cheryl Brown, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and extended family: Forrest Miller, Jr., Cory Miller, Jon Miller and Josh Miller.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Sylvetta Smith, and five sisters, infant Dawn, Shirley Hamel, Beverly Demuth, Audrey Welsh, Judy Bradley and her husbands, Forrest Miller, Sr. and Raymond Hansen.

A public visitation will be held on Monday, January 22, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m at Betzer Funeral Home, Delavan, WI. A light supper will be held at 231 W. Madison St., Darien, WI, following the visitation. Per Dorothy’s wishes, a cremation will take place and the family will celebrate her life privately in the summer.
