Refugio Godina, Sr., 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 15th, 2019 at home with family in Elkhorn, WI.
He was born on August 2nd to parents Lorenzo and Virginia Godina, of Laredo, TX. He became a resident of Fort Atkinson, WI in 1960 as a newlywed with his wife, Elena P. Godina, to start their family. He then moved to Delavan, WI and finally Elkhorn, WI where he made a permanent home until his passing.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, listening to Tejano music, watching telenovelas, and seeing the Green Bay Packers win! He proudly retired in 1998 from Chrysler and UAW after 30 years of service to enjoy spending time with his wife children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elena P. Godina, his children – Maria Godina Castillo, Maria Godina Gonzalez, Refugio Godina Jr., Angel Godina, David Godina, Andy Godina, Peter Godina and Juan Godina - as well as 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 2 daughters-in-law and 6 siblings – All who will miss him dearly.
He is welcomed in heaven by his son Carlos “Charlie” Godina, his mother and father.
Refugio will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a man with a strong work ethic and a staple to the Delavan Hispanic Community as Founder of the annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration as well as being one of the early Hispanic pioneers of Delavan.
We all will miss “dad, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend and compadre.”Public visitation is 4 to 7 Thursday, Sept. 19,.2019 at the Betzer Funeral Home. Also a two hour of visitation will take place at St. Andrews Catholic Church before the 1pm funeral mass.
A Rosary will be at 7pm Thursday at Betzer Funeral Home.
